An Unplanned Journey to Pachmarhi: A Hidden Paradise in Madhya Pradesh
The Start of an Exciting Adventure
As I kick-started my rented scooty, the cool mountain air brushed against my face. With a hand-drawn map in my pocket and curiosity in my heart, I set off to explore Pachmarhi—the Queen of Satpura.
Little did I know that this spontaneous decision would lead me to some of the most breathtaking landscapes, mystical caves, and thrilling adventures.
1. Pandav Caves – The Mythological Retreat
My first stop was Pandav Caves, located just 5 km from the bus stand. But before diving into history, I decided to fuel up with some local breakfast.
A Taste of Madhya Pradesh – Poha for Breakfast
At a small roadside stall, I ordered a plate of Poha, a light yet flavorful dish topped with crispy sev and fresh coriander. If you're in Madhya Pradesh, Poha is a must-try.
Exploring the Pandav Caves
These five rock-cut caves are believed to have been the refuge of the Pandavas during their exile (Agyatvas). The peaceful ambiance, lush gardens, and panoramic views made it a perfect start to my exploration.
2. Handi Khoh – The Mystical Gorge
Next, I headed towards Handi Khoh, a deep, narrow canyon surrounded by dense forests.
A Mythological Tale
The place is shrouded in myths—locals believe it was once a lake guarded by a serpent, which vanished after a sage defeated the creature.
Adding a Thrill – A Horse Ride
For just ₹50, I opted for a short but exhilarating horse ride along the rugged trails of Handi Khoh. The panoramic view from the cliffside was absolutely breathtaking, making it one of the most scenic spots in Pachmarhi.
3. Priyadarshini Point – A View to Remember
A short ride away was Priyadarshini Point, known for offering the best view of the highest peak in the Satpura Range.
A Panoramic Spectacle
As I stood there, the endless green valleys stretched out before me, making me realize why Pachmarhi is often called “Satpura’s Crown.” The sunlight filtering through the dense trees, painting the hills in golden hues, was a sight to behold.
4. Gupt Mahadev and Bada Mahadev – The Sacred Caves
With my excitement building up, I rode towards Gupt Mahadev and Bada Mahadev, two of Pachmarhi’s most significant pilgrimage sites.
Bada Mahadev – A Divine Cave Temple
Located right by the roadside, Bada Mahadev is a large cave temple dedicated to Lord Shiva.
Water continuously drips from the cave ceiling, creating an almost mystical ambiance.
Devotees believe this is where Lord Vishnu defeated the demon Bhasmasura.
Gupt Mahadev – A Hidden Spiritual Haven
To reach Gupt Mahadev, I had to walk 2 km into the forest and then pass through an extremely narrow, 1-foot-wide cave.
The dark, cool passage led to a sacred shrine where a priest sat near a Shiva idol, blessing devotees.
The journey through the dense jungle and tight cave passage made the experience even more thrilling.
5. Rajendra Giri – A Floral Paradise
By afternoon, I found myself at Rajendra Giri, a beautiful hilltop park named after Dr. Rajendra Prasad, India’s first President.
A Refreshing Break in Nature
Lush green lawns, vibrant flowers, and stunning viewpoints made it an ideal place to relax and soak in nature’s beauty.
There were several food stalls, and I took a refreshing chai break before continuing my adventure.
A minor downside was the paid parking charges, but it was worth the visit.
6. Pachmarhi Lake – Thrills and Serenity
For my final stop, I rode towards Pachmarhi Lake, just 3 km from the bus stand.
Adventure Activities at the Lake
Boating: The calm waters of the lake made for a serene and peaceful ride.
Zip-lining: If you’re looking for adventure, a thrilling zip-line ride over the lake is a must.
I chose boating, letting the tranquil waters and majestic Satpura forests around me create the perfect ending to my trip.
The Unexpected Twist – Missing the Last Bus
After an eventful day of exploration, I returned to the bus stand at 6 PM—only to realize I had missed the last bus to Pipariya.
The final bus left at 5:30 PM, and I was 30 minutes late.
The Last-Minute Rescue
Luckily, I found a shared taxi for ₹200, which was my only option to reach Pipariya on time.
I rushed to collect my backpack from the hotel and made it to the railway station just in time to board my train home.
This little unexpected twist reminded me that when you travel solo, flexibility is key.
Final Thoughts – The Beauty of Unplanned Travel
This trip taught me something valuable:
The best travel experiences often come from unplanned decisions.
Had I stuck to my original plan, I would have completely missed Pachmarhi, a true hidden gem of Madhya Pradesh.
If you ever find yourself near Pachmarhi, take the detour—you won’t regret it.
